Flexible packaging is now common for coffee roasters, supplement brands and dry food producers. Instead of jars or rigid containers many brands use pouches. A flexible packaging pouch takes less space in storage, lowers shipping cost and still protects the product well.  It is also a great packaging type for personalized designs, seasonal editions or small product launches.

Two formats are used most often. Stand-up pouches (doypack) and flat bottom pouches. These are by far the most popular among our customers in Europe.  We love working on those projects  ourselves.

Both are good for coffee, protein powder, nuts and other dry products. The choice usually comes down to how you want the product to look on the shelf and how much you want to spend on packaging.

What Is a Doypack (Stand-Up Pouch)?

A doypack, or stand-up pouch, is one of the most common types of flexible packaging. The pouch stands upright because of the bottom gusset.  Leon and Louis Doyen from France designed the packaging and since the name DOYpack.  Sometimes called doybag.

Many brands choose a printed doypack because it is simple, practical and cost efficient. It also works very well with digital printing and smaller production runs.

Typical features include:

  • Zipper closure

  • Tear notch

  • Matte or gloss finish

  • Optional degassing valve for coffee

  • Full surface printing

A stand-up pouch is often used for:

  • Printed coffee bags

  • Protein powders

  • Granola and nuts

  • Spices and dry mixes

For many growing brands this type of packaging bag is the easiest place to start.

What Is a Flat Bottom Pouch?

A flat bottom pouch has a square base and five printable sides. Because of this structure the pouch stands very stable and looks more structured on the shelf.

Many brands choose a printed flat bottom pouch when they want a more premium appearance.

Typical features include:

  • Square base for stability

  • Large front and back panels

  • Side panels for branding or product information

  • Zipper closure

  • Degassing valve for coffee

A custom flat bottom bag is often used for:

  • Specialty coffee

  • Premium supplements

  • Gourmet dry foods

  • Pet food products

This type of pouch gives the product a stronger presence on retail shelves.

Doypack vs Flat Bottom Pouch

Both pouch types protect the product well. The main differences are structure, design space and price.

Stand-up pouches are usually more affordable and flexible. This makes them popular with smaller brands and new product launches.

Flat bottom pouches offer better shelf presentation and more space for branding. They are often used when the product is sold in retail stores.

Both formats can be used as printed coffee bags and both can include high barrier materials to protect freshness.

If you want a practical and cost efficient option, a printed doypack is often the right choice.
If you want a stronger shelf look and more design space, a printed flat bottom pouch may be better.

Custom Coffee Pouches for Growing Brands

Coffee packaging needs specific features to protect freshness. Freshly roasted beans release gas, so most printed coffee bags include a degassing valve. Barrier materials are also important to keep oxygen and moisture out.

Both stand-up pouches and custom flat bottom bags can include these features.
